O’zapft ist! Gasthaus taped its kegs today!

For the first time in years, authentic German beer brewed in Europe and shipped overseas to Minnesota is flowing through the taps of the Gasthaus Bavarian Hunter in Stillwater. As reported by Mary Divine on the front page of the Pioneer Press last week, the “restaurant will reopen later this month with the same name, the same decor, the same hours, the same menu and the same 12 taps that only server German brewed beer.” O’zapft ist! The Gasthaus tapped its kegs today!

“The Washington County health inspector visited us this week and she told me we can start pouring beer. Based on her advisement, I ordered the kegs tapped and we will start serving beer this Friday, May 12th,” says Jimmy Martin, the two-week-old President of Schone’s, Inc. (the entity that has owned and operated Gasthaus for over a half century), “The county health inspector also said that we can serve brats, so those might be available as well. It is my hope that we will be fully open after Mother’s Day for dining.”

For the first time since 2021, the Gasthaus will be pouring beer and is on the path to re-opening with its beloved menu. As reported by Mary Divine, “Recipes that were on the Gasthaus menu for 50 years will be back, including sauerbraten and schnitzel (10 kinds), schweinshaxe (pork knuckle), and a herring sampler that features pickled herring, mustard herring, and herring in apples, onions and seasoning.”

Says Martin, “please keep checking our website, gasthausbavarianhunter.com, for an announcement regarding the grand opening date. In the meantime, come wash a few brats down with seven kinds of Paulaner and Hacker-Pschorr. As I understand it, only one retailer in the nation sells more Paulaner/Hacker-Pschorr than Gasthaus. We also have Sünner Kölsch, and beer from the Weihenstephan brewery founded in 1040. Being that it’s May, we’ve shipped in Houfbräu Haus’ Maibock from Munich for you to enjoy as their Maibaum stands in our medow!”
